Labor Day weekend in Guthrie County means one thing for many local families: fair time.
The 2026 Guthrie County Fair runs September 3 through September 7 in Guthrie Center. Between the food, livestock, exhibits, entertainment, and time spent with friends and neighbors, it is a tradition many families look forward to each year.
It can also become an expensive weekend if you arrive without a plan. A little preparation can help your family enjoy the Fair, support local vendors, and still stay comfortable with what you spend.
Start with the cost of getting in
According to the Fair’s current admission information, a day pass is $15 and a season-pass wristband is $35. Children age 5 and under are admitted free, as are active military members. Grandstand events and the carnival are also listed as free with admission.
If you plan to attend more than two days, compare the season pass with purchasing separate day passes. Knowing your admission cost ahead of time makes it easier to decide how much room is left for food, shopping, and other treats.
Set one budget for the whole visit
Before leaving home, choose a total amount you are comfortable spending. Include admission, food, drinks, purchases from vendors, and anything else your family may want to enjoy.
You do not have to plan every dollar perfectly. The goal is simply to create a limit before the sights, sounds, and smells of the Fair start competing for your attention.
Let everyone choose what matters most
One person may be looking forward to fair food, while someone else wants to shop or take home a souvenir. Talk about those priorities before you arrive.
For children, consider setting a small individual spending amount. It gives them the chance to decide whether they want one bigger item or several smaller treats. It also turns a fun day into a simple lesson about making choices.
Use the free activities to fill your day
A great fair day does not require spending money at every stop. Livestock shows, exhibits, community displays, grandstand events, and the carnival give families plenty to enjoy after admission.
Check the official Guthrie County Fair website and current schedule before you go. Planning around the events your family wants to see can help you get more out of the day without adding more purchases.
Support local without buying everything
Part of the fun is visiting food stands and local vendors. Supporting them does not mean you have to say yes to everything. Pick a few purchases that feel worthwhile, enjoy them, and skip the ones that do not fit the plan.
That is a useful spending habit all year long. Staying on budget is not about avoiding every enjoyable purchase. It is about choosing where your money will mean the most to you.
Enjoy the Fair with a plan
The Guthrie County Fair is one of the traditions that makes our area special. With a simple budget and a little planning, your family can enjoy the weekend without bringing home unnecessary financial stress.
